Metal film resistors are widely used in applications that require low noise and low drift, such as precision measurement equipment and medical devices.
3. Wirewound Resistor
Wirewound resistors are made by winding a resistive wire around an insulating core. These resistors offer high power handling capabilities and are commonly used in applications where high accuracy and stability are required, such as power supplies and industrial machinery.
Importance of Resistors in Electrical Circuits
1. Voltage Division: Resistors are often used in voltage divider circuits to divide the input voltage into smaller, more manageable values. This is essential in various applications, such as level shifting, biasing transistors, and controlling the intensity of LEDs.
2. Current Limiting: In many circuits, resistors are used to limit the amount of electric current flowing through a component or a specific part of the circuit. This prevents damage by ensuring that the current stays within safe limits and protects sensitive components from overheating.
3. Timing and Oscillation: Resistors are widely used in conjunction with capacitors to create RC circuits, which help control the timing and oscillation frequencies in electronic systems. These circuits find applications in various devices, ranging from basic timers to complex oscillators.
